GHK-Cu and Skin Remodeling: What Lab Studies Say About Collagen, Scars and Acne Marks

GHK-Cu is one of the most studied peptides in skin biology. Its name comes from its sequence, glycine-histidine-lysine, bound to a copper ion. The free tripeptide weighs only about 340 daltons, which makes it tiny compared with most proteins.

Where it came from

Researcher Loren Pickart identified GHK in human blood plasma in the early 1970s. He noticed that plasma from younger donors helped older liver tissue behave more youthfully in the lab, and traced part of that effect to this small peptide. Levels in blood appear to decline with age, which is one reason it attracted attention.

What cell studies report

  • In cultures of skin fibroblasts, GHK-Cu has been reported to increase production of collagen and other matrix components such as decorin.
  • It has been reported to influence enzymes called MMPs and their inhibitors, which control how old matrix is broken down and replaced.
  • Some studies describe effects on inflammatory signaling and antioxidant defenses in cultured cells.

Why acne marks come up

After a deep or long-lasting breakout, skin has to rebuild. Indented scars form when collagen is lost or laid down unevenly. Because GHK-Cu is studied in exactly that rebuilding process, it appears often in research discussions about scars and texture.

What this does not mean

Cell-culture results do not automatically carry over to a person’s face. Skin has layers, a barrier, and a delivery problem. Research-grade GHK-Cu and Topical GHK-Cu are sold by Lucid Aminos for laboratory investigation only, and nothing here is a claim that either one treats acne or scars.

If you are dealing with scarring, a board-certified dermatologist can discuss options with proven track records.
