How to Choose a Research Peptide for Skin Studies: Purity, COAs and Handling

Skin-research results are only as good as the peptide behind them. A contaminated, mislabeled or degraded sample can ruin an experiment. Here is how researchers judge quality before they start.

1. Read the certificate of analysis (COA)

A COA is the lab report for a specific batch. Look for the batch number, the date, the testing lab and the results. A COA that is generic or not tied to a batch tells you very little. Lucid Aminos publishes batch reports on its COA page.

2. Understand purity by HPLC

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separates a sample into its components. A purity of 99% means that 99% of the detected material is the target peptide. But purity alone is not the full story.

3. Check identity by mass spectrometry

Mass spectrometry confirms that the molecule has the expected mass. A sample can be pure and still be the wrong peptide, so identity matters as much as purity.

4. Ask about third-party testing

  • Independent labs have no stake in the sale
  • Repeat testing by batch shows consistency

5. Handle and store it correctly

  • Lyophilized peptides are stable in a cool, dry place and best kept cold and away from light for the long term
  • Reconstitute with sterile solvent such as bacteriostatic water, and add it slowly without shaking
  • Once mixed, store cold and follow the guidance from the lab report and supplier

Red flags

  • No batch-specific testing
  • Claims about curing or treating conditions
  • Sellers who cannot show a lab report
