Peptides and Post-Acne Dark Marks: What Pigment Research Says About Melanocortin Peptides and GHK-Cu

Dark marks that remain after a pimple heals are called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). They are a different problem from acne scars, and the peptide research around them looks different too.

How dark marks form

When skin is inflamed, pigment cells called melanocytes can overproduce melanin, and the extra pigment gets deposited in the surrounding skin. Sun exposure can darken these marks. Because inflammation drives them, controlling inflammation early is a recurring theme in the research.

Melanocortin peptides and pigment

Melanocortin receptors, especially MC1R, control pigment production. Compounds such as Melanotan-1 and Melanotan-2 are melanocortin receptor agonists studied for pigmentation signaling. They are research tools for understanding the pathway, not treatments for dark marks, and they raise their own open questions.

Inflammation and repair peptides

  • KPV is studied for inflammatory signaling, the starting point of PIH
  • GHK-Cu is studied for repair and remodeling signals in skin models

What the research cannot yet say

There are few direct studies of peptides on acne-related pigmentation in people. Much of the work looks at pigment biology in general. Marks usually fade on their own over months, and sunscreen is consistently recommended in dermatology guidance to avoid darkening.
